Question

Blog Pages Tanking on Google Search Console Validation (Speed)

Hey all,

After doing some work on our Elementor site we saw big improvements to Page Speed Insights across the board…. except for the blog pages on mobile. They are failing Google’s check which is hurting our SEO ranking harder than we would like. We have done all of the clear cut things to improve it and are pretty lost. Any ideas here? Really appreciate it.

Hi @travishalff. What’s on your blog page? Do you have a link to one of them?

Sure-- here is one. Nothing too special, just text and images for the most part.

Here is a better example since it is listed in that first screenshot I sent. https://pro-vigil.com/blog/ip-camera-vs-analog-cctv-camera/

I did some test and I noticed a good chunk of your CSS files are render-blocking. Are you using a WordPress optimization plugin (I think you are, but making sure)? You could use loading them asynchronously. Screenshot.

Also props to your website. Despite what Google says, your site loads pretty fast.

Funny you sent that. That’s exactly what I was doing. =^)

Ha, glad we are on the same page! And I am using a plugin-- Nitro Pack, which has done wonders for everything but the score on mobile for the blog pages :/

Is there a different plugin you would recommend to just target these problem pages?

And thank you-- yes, the overall site speed makes the failing report from Google all the more confusing.

I use LiteSpeed Cache which is amazing, but I honestly can’t recommend it unless you know your server works on LiteSpeed (otherwise it won’t work).

If you want to unload styles on specific pages, you can try the Asset CleanUp plugin; or better, you unqueue specific styles on your blog page. It seems that you are not using the Font Awesome 4 library but still loading it.

Also, really, try to see if you can find a way to defer/load asynchronously your CSS in Nitro Pack (if not, find a plugin for it). Not loading those asynchronously impacts loading times A LOT.

Do you have the Improved Asset and CSS Loading turned on in the Elementor experiments (two different settings)? That could help a lot.

Nitro Pack seems to think it is deferring and loading asynchronously, though maybe it is messing up on mobile for the blog pages. I had tried the experimental settings in the past to mixed results, but just turned them on again and am re-caching the site to see if we get any movement!

I only see async on your JS but not your CSS. What does your setting says?

Here you go!

Sorry for the late reply. A few things:

  • Usually combining CSS/JS files into a single resource isn’t good practice because it actually increase rendering time and make your site load slower overall (and particularly for first-time visitors). [1 2]
  • What are the additional options below “Optimize CSS delivery”?
  • You have lots of scripts in the header. This block page rendering. Anyway you can load them in the footer (before </body>) instead?

Your website already pass Core Web Vitals Assessments and you don’t need to further optimize your website for SEO
